Comic-Geek: Why You Should Read MoonKnight!

Being a fan of the comic genre is not hard. There is a little something for everyone and there are many tastes that can be suited to whatever your personality calls for. Me? Im into dark and gritty, and nothing seems to capture like my interest like the Moon Knight series by marvel. It has everything a guy like me (and many other true believers) could ever want: a well written and thought out story, well penciled and illustrated cells, and a character plot that is so interesting and unique that you wonder why this series isn’t a household name (ie: X-Men, Batman, Spiderman etc...)

All things considered, the saga of Marc Spector (Moon Knight) is a great one and an amazing franchise. It centers around Marc who is a “Jack-of-all trades” kind of guy. He’s a boxer, a mercenary and a U.S. marine, all of which he is good at. However, he is kind of a head case. For those of you who don’t know, Marc Spector went on an archeological escapade of sorts, and was beaten near death and left in the desert to rot. However, he is revitalized and reborn with a second chance by the God of the Moon: Khonshu. Khonshu does not do this free of charge however, but sites Spector as his avatar in which to invoke justice and his bidding. There you go, the back story.

This installment of the series is particularly well written and extremely well illustrated. David Finch is in my opinion, the best comic book artist out there right now. However, later in the series they do switch artists (which I DESPISE) and writers as well. It goes from Charlie Huston to Mike Benson. Both do a fantastic job, but I prefer Huston over the latter.

With that being said and without too many spoilers, this saga does not disappoint and deals with Spector falling apart mentally and physically not being able to hold it together. He does not even really believe that Khonshu (his God) is actually there to help him. He does manage to pull himself together and once again becomes the Moon Knight, but at what cost? You have to read to find out. I will say that the details are all very gory and bleak and there is a real sense of hopelessness as well a justice.

Since this is my first comic review/article, I wasn’t sure how to go about how to write something like this. I know as a comic reader myself , I would not want to read something about a comic franchise I loved so dearly and have it spoiled by just seeing if it was worth the read or not. With that in mind, I kept it relatively brief and to the point. That point is: GO READ THIS SERIES. MOON KNIGHT RULES! If you are still in the dark (which if against Moon Knight is not a good thing) about this masked marvel, my best description would be to call him Marvel Comic’s version of Batman. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Batman but Moon Knight has the same dark aura to him that Batman does with all the gadgets and sleekness, but improves on the fact that Batman does not have “powers”. Moon Knight gets stronger from how much the moon is showing (full moon=lots of power). Sound cool? It is...and David Finch really seems to capture what your brain would make this guy look like. O yea, and if that is not enough, did I mention he is really brutally violent? Awesome!

I would like for all you comic book junkies out there to leave me comments on how you would like me to take an angle for my upcoming reviews and any requests. Please leave feedback...I ll do my best to meet your requests!
