Tired of the rising cost of gasoline? Unveiled earlier this week, Japanese company Genepax, has invented an electric car that is solely powered by water. And not just distilled or bottled water, the prototype pictured above can also use as little as one liter of any type of water, including rain and sea water, to get you going 80km / 50 mph for one hour. You simply pour water into the tank, a special engine breaks down the water by a form of electrolysis, and you’re on your way.






“The engine generates power from the supply of air and water. Company’s own Water Energy System (WES) uses their own membrane electrode assembly (MEA) which break water down into oxygen and hydrogen through chemical reactions producing energy similar to that of a regular fuel engine.”

Before you get too excited, Genepax is still in very early development of their water-based auto. Manufacturing plans have not bee announced, but Genepax is in talks with various Japanese auto makers. Most likely Genepax may lease the WES technology to various auto makers, so don’t expect to see the smart car look-a-like buzzing around the streets anytime soon.
