20 years after the original Reebok pump sneaker in 1989, Reebok is introducing its next generation of “pump sneaker” with the Reebok SmoothFit SelectRide. With a touch of a button, Reebok’s new sneaker allows adjustable cushioning by transforming from flat and stable cross trainers to cushioned running shoes, by use of an inflatable bladder within the sole of the shoe. Now with the SelectRides, gym enthusiasts won’t have to switch sneakers when moving from weightlifting to the treadmill.
From Popsci.com
“For your warm-up jog, just push the button on the side of the shoe marked ‘run’. This opens an intake valve in a manual pump in the heel of the shoe. With each step you take, air is drawn into the bladder. After 5-10 steps, the shoe’s sole lifts the foot up by an extra four millimeters, providing 21.6% more cushioning.”
“When you’re all warmed up and ready to diversify your workout, just push the ‘train’ button and the shoe reverts to a stiffer version of itself, with increased stability.”

The Reebok SmoothFit SelectRide will be available within the next few weeks, at a retail cost of $149.99.
