"Earlier this week, Marvel finally revealed the director for First Avenger: Captain America. That director is Joe Johnston. Johnston is best known for his family friendly adventure films like Jumanji and Hidalgo, as well as the slightly less family-friendly Jurassic Park III. Comic book fans, though, may best remember Johnston for his work on 1992's The Rocketeer, still one of the best examples of comic-to-movie translations."
"Already the debate is heating up as to whether Marvel made the right choice in selecting Johnston for the difficult task of translating Cap to the big screen. Stumble along the way and you could end up with something along the lines of 1990's disastrous Cap movie."
"So the question is – can Johnston handle a darker, grittier sort of superhero movie? The sheer fact that movies like Jumanji are even on his resume is a bit worrisome. More disturbing is Jurassic Park III. We used to call ourselves huge fans of the Jurassic Park franchise. Our love was diminished after Lost World, but the fire never truly died until Jurassic Park III doused it with the icy cold water of disappointment and disgust."
"Perhaps. As we mentioned, The Rocketeer still goes a long way towards washing the bad taste of JP III out of our mouths. The trappings of Captain America and Rocketeer aren't dissimilar, so it's possible this cult classic may serve as useful practice for a much bigger and more expensive epic."
