Web slinging, swinging from building to building, beating up baddies all while remaining incognito...it’s a typical day in the life for Spider-Man. Spider-Man Web of Shadows gives you just what you would expect from a Spider-Man title and then some. All, because of the symbiote suit that has melded with him due to a fight with Venom. You are now free to switch in between suits each with their own unique powers and feel.
Lets get one thing straight here, I am NOT a Spider-Man fan. I think he is perhaps the worst and most overrated character in the Marvel Universe, and don’t get why so many people love him so much. He is wayyyy too much of a nerd, and his tongue in cheek comments are NOT funny. Anyway, now that my bashing of Spider-Man is done, you know that Im giving you my true opinion of how I feel here.
All Bull**** aside, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is the best Spider-Man game I have ever played. The controls are smooth, graphics look well polished and they have really captured the feeling of swinging across the city. The ability to switch between the two suits also really is awesome. I prefer the symbiote suit (which you get early in the game after a brief battle with Venom) which allows you to throw cars and cause way more overall destruction. ( Something Spider-Man always seems to lack).
Again , the controls are really smooth and there are no real complaints about how they operate. However, the only bone I have to pick is the camera. It can become a bit of a pain-in-the-neck at times when crawling up the side of a building and give you that “Im underwater, but looking up feeling” and give you a bit feeling of vertigo. Otherwise, pummeling your enemies has never been so fun, especially in the air. And swinging through New York City has as an amazing appeal and it feels great.
In terms of story, its pretty interesting and what you would expect from Marvel. You are trying to save the city, and after a battle with Venom you get “infected” by him and are then able to switch in between your original and the Venom-esque symbiote suit all with the aforementioned differences. You have your fair share of run-in’s with fan favorites who either help you or do battle with. And since you run into Moon Knight, this game scored some brownie points with me. The only thing that is a little lame is beating up gangs that pretty much look the same, but hey, what can you expect from a beat-em-up?
Lastly, the presentation is really above par. The graphics look smooth and polished and there is no slow down. You can have many enemies and a lot of things on screen at one time and things go smoothly. As far as the sound goes, there are no complaints. Its nothing mind blowing, but its not annoying. The voice acting left a little bit to be desired, but shockingly is not as bad as some other titles that are great as well.
All in all, if you are looking for a fun, action-packed beat-em-up with the famed web-slinger, than Web of Shadows is the way to go. It has a little bit of something for everyone, and minus some minor afflictions is a fun title. The PS3 and XBox360 versions stand light years above the Wii version in all areas but the Wii version is still fun but just not as good.
