Starting next Tuesday, the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will begin testing their new automated conductor system on L line subway trains. The Communications Based Train Control system (CBTC) is completely autonomous, and once perfected, will operate without any human intervention. The system was created to help reduce overcrowding, found in many NYC subway stations, by running trains closer together and on a “full time” basis.
During the preliminary test, should any problems or glitches arise, train conductors will be on hand to help resolve these issues. The tests will first occur during off peak and overnight hours, well before rush hour times. The 300 million dollar system has “been delayed many times over the years due to software problems, technical glitches and a failure to order enough CBTC-ready subway cars.” While there is concern over safety issues regarding the system, the MATA stands by the CBTC saying "This is a safe system with proven technology," "This technology is not in its infancy."
