Nwn.blogs.com is reporting, after Israel began bombing targets in Gaza last week, the Israeli / Palestinian conflict has been become a much heated topic among the Second Life community. In fact, many gamers have taken to the virtual streets of SL Israel (A virtual Israel depicting recreated landmarks from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv) and began showing signs of protest by waving flags, shouting obscenities and holding banners, some in which show pictures of dead Arab children. The protesting became so disruptive to the SL Israel community, its creators were forced to temporarily close the virtual landscape and isolate itself from any outside intruders. Despite attempts to squash the protests, gamers are still flocking to SL Israel some wearing anti war and “free Palestine” t-shirts and one avatar came dressed as an IDF soldier.
Not all gamers opposing the conflict are using “hate” speech and profanity to express their feelings. Many have setup conversations and debates within SL Israel, to intelligently discuss the on-going battle. Until the fighting in Gaza has subsided and a proper cease-fire is maintained, SL Israel will remain the Second Life epicenter of much heated debates and protests regarding Israeli / Palestinian conflict.
