Not good news for those anticipating Warner Bros. upcoming Watchmen movie. In a recent court ruling, a judge has ruled that fox owns the rights to distribute the Watchmen motion picture. This puts Warner is an precarious situation and are still insiting on their March 6 2009 rlease date. Unless a deal is made between Warner Brothers and 20 Century Fox (which I am more than positive will be), moviegoers may have to wait a while, if ever, for Watchmen.
It’s ashame Watchmen has to have such a negative line shine upon it. This movie has had nothing but positive responses from it’s fan based community, which is very rare for movies based on comic books and graphic novels.
From Variety.com
"In a Christmas Eve decision, a Los Angeles federal judge ruled that Fox owns the distribution rights to "Watchmen." "Fox owns a copyright interest consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the 'Watchmen' motion picture," Judge Gary Allen Feess ruled."
"The suit asserts that producer Lawrence Gordon's option to acquire Fox's remaining interest in "Watchmen" was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with its rights under a 1994 turnaround agreement. Warner Bros. has denied Fox's assertions and contends Fox doesn't hold the copyright."
"Fox originally acquired the rights to "Watchmen" in the late 1980s and spent more than $1 million developing the project, which later went to Universal and then Paramount before landing at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures."
